New Zealand Post Book Awards Finalist - Picture Book Category

The King's Bubbles by Ruth Paul

"Perfect and round
A sigh without sound
A circle of air
Simple and spare"

King Bill is dismayed and becomes very bad tempered when all the beautiful bubbles he creates float away. After demanding his advisors find a solution he finally discovers for himself that letting them go was what made them such fun.

This rhyming picture book with its lovely illustrations would make a very good read aloud for junior classes.

I can't find the place where I can add a comment about OUT OF THE EGG so will say here. It reminds me of the story of the Little Red Hen I know. I love the black and white illustrations with the use of just two other colours of red and green to add contrast. I like the way the little chick showed the Mummy hen how to stop being mean.

The King's Bubbles was very appropriate for us.We were in the middle of planning a bubble festival. All the children became bubbleologists for two days. They discovered bubbles in all forms and shapes and were even inside giant bubbles. The story kept the children entranced as well as being able to relate to it.The graphics were entertaining.
Well done
