Elsie Locke's Canoe in the Mist is a neatly constructed historial novel of old New Zealand. It was first published in 1984 and in a sense was a precursor to the recent Scholastic "My Story" series. As the title suggests the story is based on the extraordinary events leading up to and including the Tarawera eruption and has reference to the real people affected by this natura; disaster. Maps of the Rotorua Lakes district in 1886 are presented in the front and back of the book. A useful glossary of Maori words and phrases is also provided.
The fact that the book was republished in 2005 confirms that it has and continues to be a very readble story for today's year 6 - 8 students.
